Statement by PLO Secretary General Dr. Saeb Erekat on the occasion of Palestine’s Independence Day, President Yasser Arafat’s memory and the terror attacks in Lebanon and France.

On November 15^th 1988, the Palestine National Council declared the independence of the State of Palestine, endorsing all principles of international law and UN resolutions. For our people this moment of hope was also a moment of a painful historical compromise, by which the PLO recognized Israel over 78% of historic Palestine.

Honoring the Palestinian people’s rights, as per international law, would undoubtedly be the main stabilizing factor for the region.

Q1. How would you describe the current situation on the ground? 

A1. A new generation of Palestinians is marching in the footsteps of previous generations, rising up against Israel’s brutal, decades-old regime of occupation, settler colonialism and apartheid. It is yet another phase of the popular struggle against what Palestinian, Jordanianand other parliamentarians and officials have described as Israel’s “state terrorism.”
