Hanoi - In commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people (29th November), the Vietnam’s Committee for Solidarity with the Palestinian people, the Vietnam-Palestine Friendship Association of the city of Hanoi and the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Vietnam co-organized a ceremony on 22nd December 2015 in Hanoi.

The ceremony is held few months after the momentous ceremony took place in the Rose Garden at the United Nations to raise the flag of the State of Palestine alongside the flags of the countries of the world.

Among the VIP guests attending the ceremony were Mr. Vu Hong Nam, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, Mr. Saadi Salama, Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Vietnam, Mr. Youssouf Abdel-Jelil, UN Resident Coordinator ad interim and Mr. Ho Anh Dung - Chairman of Vietnam’s Committee for Solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Mr. Youssouf Abdel-Jelil, UN Resident Coordinator ad interim read the message from Secretary-General of the UN Ban Ki Moon, quoted: “On 29 November 2012, the State of Palestine joined the United Nations as a “non-Member observer State”. Today, 136 countries recognize the State of Palestine and its flag flies at the United Nations next to those of all Member States.  However, these advances are not felt by children in Gaza, or by the residents of Nablus, Hebron and East Jerusalem.  What they feel instead is a lack of hope that their lives will change for the better and that they will be citizens of a State able to ensure their freedom and well-being through peace with their neighbors. On this International Day of Solidarity, let us reaffirm our commitment to bring about the just peace that the peoples of Israel and Palestine deserve.”

Mr. Ho Anh Dung - Chairman of Vietnam’s Committee for Solidarity with the Palestinian people reaffirmed that Vietnam “always and will support the just struggle of the Palestinian people for the basic national rights. We also desire that the Palestinian people will continue to consolidate the national solidarity to gain the victory, establishing the State of Palestine in their land.”

In his speech at the ceremony, Mr. Saadi Salama, Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Vietnam, extended the profound appreciation and gratitude to the countries that have recognized the State of Palestine and to all countries that extend their support to the just cause of Palestinian people by voting positively at the United Nations and in international forums on the many important resolutions regarding the question of Palestine, including in favor of Palestine’s status at the United Nations and the raising of its flag at the UN headquarters and its offices around the world.

Ambassador Saadi Salama also renewed the gratitude to the United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations and civil society, and to all the brothers, sisters, friends and all freedom and peace-loving peoples around the world, as well as the friendly people of Viet Nam, who continue to steadfastly stand by the Palestinian people. “We are grateful for their solidarity and support to the fundamental national rights of our people, including the right of self-determination and the right to establish a state of Palestine in our home land.”“The Palestinian people have the right to enjoy freedom, dignity, sovereignty and independence in their Palestinian State with East Jerusalem as its capital. This is imperative for our region to enjoy security, safety and stability. Peace is our ultimate goal. It is a Palestinian, Arab and international interest. It is within our reach, if there is a political will and there are sincere intentions to achieve it for a better future for all our peoples and for all our children. We firmly believe that the struggle of our Palestinian people with the strong support of the international community will achieve full victory.”
