Arab Leauge: Chance remains for negotiations to move forward

CAIRO (Ma'an) -- Arab League deputy secretary-general Ahmed Ben Helli criticized pressure on President Mahmoud Abbas in negotiations with Israel, saying that pressure should be exerted on Israel for not upholding their commitments.

Ben Helli said that a meeting between Arab foreign ministers, which was called by Abbas, will be held Wednesday to brief them on the updates of the peace process and the options the PLO is considering.

“We are convinced that the Palestinian position will be supported by Arabs,” Ben Helli said. “We still think that the United States has a role in pushing the peace process forward.”

He added that they still think there is a chance for negotiations to move forward, but all indicators suggest that Israeli negotiators are making excuses and maneuvering their way out of achieving peace.

He reiterated the Arab League support for Palestine and its decision to join international treaties.
