BRUSSELS, April 2, 2014 – (WAFA) – The European United Left/ Nordic Green Left group in the European Parliament offered Wednesday unwavering support for the Palestinian leadership’s decision to apply for membership in 15 agencies and international treaties.

Speaking on behalf of the group, GUE/NGL Vice-President Patrick Le Hyaric said: 'The GUE/NGL group supports the legitimate demands of the Palestinian people to be part of the international conventions and treaties that the status of UN observers confers on them.”

He added: “Rules of international law concerning the protection of people in the event of armed conflict and occupation must be respected everywhere, including in Palestine.'

He continued: 'Palestinians have the right to enforce the four Geneva Conventions, complain and initiate proceedings regarding violations of human rights and the expansion of settlements, and also refer cases to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for serious violations of international law and in particular the continued occupation of Palestinian land taken by Israel during the 1967 war, as well as the detention conditions of Palestinian prisoners.'

'The international community and the European Union cannot continue to turn a blind eye when it comes to the rights of the Palestinian people.”
