Dr. Ashrawi: On the occasion of Prisoners’ Day and the collective hunger strike, we pay tribute to our prisoners for their courage and steadfastness

RAMALLAH, PALESTINE (April 16, 2017) -- Marking Palestinian Prisoners’ Day (April 17) and the upcoming hunger-strike by Palestinian prisoners, PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi issued the following statement: 

“On the occasion of Palestinian Prisoners’ Day and the start of tomorrow’s collective and open-ended hunger strike which is led by imprisoned Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) member Marwan Barghouthi and will be joined by more than 1,600 Palestinian prisoners representing various political factions, we honor and pay great tribute to our prisoners for their courage, continued steadfastness and commitment to independence and justice in the face of the belligerent military occupier.

STATEMENT OF THE SPOKESMAN FOR THE UN SECRETARY-GENERAL ON ISRAELI SETTLEMENT ACTIVITY IN THE OCCUPIED PALESTINE

The Secretary-General took notice with disappointment and alarm of the decision by Israel to build a new settlement in the occupied Palestinian territory.   
The Secretary-General has consistently stressed that there is no Plan B for Israelis and Palestinians to live together in peace and security.

He condemns  all unilateral actions that, like the present one, threaten peace and undermine the two-state solution.   
Settlement activities are illegal under international law and present an obstacle to peace.

1. How are water resources in Palestine and Israel supposed to be shared?

According to the Palestinian position, the sharing of transboundary water resources between Palestine and Israel is to be governed by international law, and its main principles. 

The right to water and sanitation, an individual basic human right, has been implicitly and explicitly enshrined through international conventions such as the International Covenant on Economic and Social Rights (ICESCR), the Convention Against All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).   Indeed all transboundary freshwater resources must be shared “equitably and reasonably” in line with customary international law.
