Foreign Ministry Condemns Administrative Detention Policy against Palestinians

Wednesday, 21 May 2014 11:53

Ramallah (WAFA) – The Foreign Ministry, in a statement Tuesday, strongly condemned the Israeli government’s policy of administrative detention, without charge or trial, against Palestinian prisoners.

Prisoners under administrative detention are detained with no specific charge or conviction on the basis of what they call confidential information, which does not entitle the detainee or his lawyer to view his charges.

The ministry condemned the Israeli prison administration’s arbitrary measures against the administrative prisoners, who have been on an open-ended hunger strike since the 24th of April, warning of the serious repercussions of the new Israeli law of forced alimentation on prisoners’ lives.

The ministry reported that they are following up with all countries, including the United Nations, on the condition of the striking prisoners and reasons behind their strike.

It held the Israeli government fully responsible for the lives of the 186 striking prisoners, particularly since many of them suffer from serious health conditions.

The ministry called on the Israeli government to stop the practice of administrative detention against Palestinians in accordance with the international public law, international humanitarian law and relevant Geneva Conventions.

The ministry also urged the human rights organizations to not only show solidarity with the prisoners through condemnation statements but to take actual steps to release the Palestinian prisoners, especially those under administrative detention.
